Organisational Theory And Management In Practice Commerce Essay
Organisational Theory And Management In Practice Commerce EssayAn governing body is a complex body partd social system consisting of groups of individuals seduceing together to meet some agreed-on objectives. Organizational theory (OT) is the study of institutions for the benefit of identifying common themes for the purpose of answer problems, maximizing efficiency and productivity, and meeting he demand of stakeholders. Consistently OT jackpot be conceptualized as studying three major sub billics individual processes, group processes and organisational process. Since organizations consider the field of public health from free clinic to refugee crisis support teams to explore institutions, an soul of organizations and how they work, helps public health professionals to be more effective participants in and leadership of organizations. The first evaluate will try to accomplish the huge task of summarizing major concepts in organizational theory. The three broad concepts tha t will be explored implyindividual processes, includingmotivation theory, individualality theory, and fictitious character theorygroup processesincludingworking in groups/communication,leadership, andpower and influence andorganizational processes, as it relates toorganizational structure, andorganizational culture. In the process a basically introduction to select organizational models will also be presented.Organizational Issues How well do the unlike units of c atomic number 18 lecture fit with sensation an other? For example if the laboratory was contracted out to a lab several miles away, the hospital may be limited by the time it takes for medicine to be collected, transported, analyzed and transported back. This process may also be on a schedule, (on the hour or half hour) which then adds the detainment time for transportation. An in-house lab staff might be considered, although cost of overhead and staffing would have to be considered for its cost. What also is the clima te in the organization, are works boilersuit satisfy, dedicated, feel empowered to deliver excellent care? Has the organization build and supported a culture of excellence? The second evaluate will lean on, Where is decision-making centralized, and what would be the benefits and disadvantages of diversifying sources of power? In light of the patient population needs, what types of problems are most commonly seen? Uniform vs. diversity pressures help to guide modes of action. If a gage of non- shrewd conditions are presented to the hospital we might want to consider the utilization of an Urgent care model ancillary to maintaining the ER for acute condition. We will assume that acute issues, and staff link up issues are not the problem, since resolving them would be self-explanatory. We will consider only adjustments in organizational structure and design for the sake of relevancy to the topic of OT. For example, Queens Hospital consider a new model of care delivery, in which the Emergency Department diversifies to a decentralized model of way and adds new modes for care delivery. The new process would look something like this When a patient enters the hospital they are seen immediately by a Triage nurse. The nurse has the option, by and by registration is complete, to one of three routes the nurse can channel a patient through the traditional method, to be seen by Emergency room physicians accord to priority. The nurse can also decide to transfer non-acute patients to urgent care center (an initiative of this hospital or a close center), or to indoctrinate pre-approved protocols for common illnesses, (such as asthma) prior to visitation from the physician.Utilizing this model has a few advantages. By developing the structural complexity, patients can take service initiated and completed at a faster rate. That is not only provide the hospital to see more patients, but it will improve consumers satisfaction. Also job roles and responsibilities may affix the motivation of staff by maximizing their operate of patient care. Nurses can more effictively utilizie their professional skills and doctors can focus on patients with conditions or complications that require their skill and training.ReferenceOrganizational Theory by Kathryn BarzilaiManagement and Organisational Behaviour Plus MyLab Access Codeby Laurie J. Mullins(Paperback27 Apr 2010)3.2 Analyse the relationship between caution structure and culture and its effect on moving in setanceManagers are people who guide an organization towards transaction of the business objectives (the generation100, 2010). Management impacts the culture of the organization. elaboration is an intangible set of practises that take their origins from socio, political, religious-norms and values of the society. Its the responsibility of management to develop a coherent culture that allows the members of organization to develop their individual and collective abilities. so having the right managem ent structure that would assist in this regard is quite crucial. In the recent business environment when the rules for buy the farmning the business have been formalise management is responsible for the overall running of the organization. The modern business employees the M-form (Multi-divisional form) or U-Form (Unitary form) of management structure depending on the type of firm. The structure of the firm is closely link up to its success (Abe, 1997).By classifying management into these two categories management of modern organizations have been able to focus on developing a structure that would best meet the needs of the organization. Management plays a key role in inducing the kind of organizational culture that could lead to organizational success. Management if effectively utilizes its potential it can induce a culture that would translate into motivated staff that feel associated with the core values of their organizations. It was the vision of the management of South West Airlines that transformed it into one of the most successful Low cost aviationlines of the world. Each member of the organization was valued by the company and their opinions were given important.Mintzberg suggested a topology of five different configurations of management structure whose sundry(a) combinations could be used to manage an organization. These five components include The operation core , the strategic apex , the middle line , the techno structure and support staff ( Bedrouni et.al.,2009 ).Depending on the what component plays the key part in the operations of the organization there could be wide variety of coordination mechanism that could run the organization. When the strategic apex holds the key, management part that it is able to carry out direct supervision of over the staff and is a lot more control of the organization. As mentioned earlier every organization has got its own type of culture that is created as a result of several factors. A culture builds over a number of each and it is not easy to identify. According to Harrison culture can be categorized into four different types .These four types include Power, Role, Task/ performance and Person/Support Cultures (Harrison, 1986).In an organization power culture originates from a single source. This kind of culture stems in a situation where there are less procedures bear on and members of the organization put a lot of faith in a single person that lies at the centre of the web (Naouman,2001 ).In the modern organizations where members are given great deal of importance individual culture could be most appropriate to describe them. In this type of culture a lot of focus is given to the individuals so that their interests are better served. The problem with this type of culture is that such individuals cannot be managed easily as organization is as well as concerned most appeasing them. In the role culture the focus is on the roles and the culture is associated with posts rather than in dividuals who are on them. Finally the task achievement culture encourages much more disciplined management style where achievement of the objectives is of par issue forth importance. For successful business operations execution it is important that organization that are running their operations overseas are fully aware of the type of cultures that exist in the other countries. E.g. in China people in the top management position are generally older people who are generally respected due to their age. A new manager coming from the States needs to be aware of the cultural norms of China otherwise he mind up end of upsetting senior Chinese officials and it would create an air of mistrust in the organization.thitherfore success of business is closely linked with the induction of a culture that enhances the potential of the company employees and makes them feel responsible towards their company. An organization depending on its industry type needs to understand that what management style would be best suiting it. Due to non-tangible of culture it is paid less concern to by the senior managers and later it could give rise to lots of un-foreseen complication resulting in failure of organizations.ReferencesAbe,E.,(1997)The Development of Modern line of work in Japan The Business History Review , Vol.71.,No.2,pg299-308Harrison , R. The most iconic held theories are discussed below and have been developed ov er the last hundred age or so. Unfortunately these theories do not all reach the same conclusions.Motivation is the stimulus that can either be conscious or unconscious which acts as an incentive for achievement of goal ( Borkowski, 2010). The drive to achieve a goal is base on psychological or social factors. The building terminate for motivation includes expectation, behavior, goals and some form of feedback ( Srivastava, 2005 ).What it means is that an individual may have a number of desires and expectation that could be driven by a person needs to gain higher position in an organization or to gain some kind of financial benefit . There are various number of motivational theories. Based on what has been stated in the literature motivational theories have been classified into two types by Borkowski (2010). These two groupings are based on content and process.Content theories or the need theories identify various factors that motivate people. Its the individual desire to satisf y inner needs that motivates them. It tries to look at the behaviour from the perspective of individual working in an organization. It is helpful for managers who want to understand the behaviour of their employees. The process theory looks at the behaviour itself that is generated by the individual. It sees that how behaviour is energized, directed, sustained and how it can be stopped (Borkowski, 2010). Motivational theories have gained significant importance as the co-relation between employee attitude towards his work and its impact on the choice of work has been analyzed. Motivation is not just about giving speeches but it is about ensuring higher take of staff satisfaction in the job role that they are in. There are a number of motivation theories that are in the literature. Two important motivational theories considered are as follows.Maslow Hierarchy of inescapably TheoryIt is one of the most popular theories that are stated about motivation. According to this theory human needs are put in a hierarchical form ( Koontz Weihrich,2006 ). These needs are ascending from the lowest to the highest. According to Maslow when one set of needs is satisfied at a certain level it no more becomes a motivational factor and person moves on to the next level. The various levels starting from bottom up as suggested in the numeral are physiological needs, Security or safety needs, acceptance needs, Esteem needs and Need for self actualization. This theory helps the organization in better understanding the needs of its employees. The organization are made aware that if they want to satisfy the needs of their employees they have to provide an environment where their individual needs are satisfied on various levels. The categorization of needs into different levels helped in better understanding of how motivation works in the organization.Maslow theory though quite brazen-faced has been criticized as a simplistic division of individual needs. According to the critics su ch as Douglas T Hall and Khalil Nougaim ( Koontz Weihrich,2006). The needs the priority of needs may qualify at the top depending on the individual.DRana_assignmentRAUFMaslowsTheory.pngMaslow Model (Source Koontz Weihrich, 2006 )Herzbergs Two Factor TheoryHerzbergs two factor theory is based on the actual research that was carried out by Herzberg. For testifying his theory he asked a number of employees to recall the instances when they felt motivated towards their work and the times when they felt frustrated. Based on what he observed Herzberg suggested that when certain factors are present in the work environment they lead to motivation of staff members and this absence causes dissatisfaction of employees towards their work (Davies, 2007). The satisfaction is closely related to the environment in which employees are working. Therefore management should provide the environment where employees feel satisfied with their work. This could include safe working condition, reasonable salary and benefits. The critique of Herzberg theory is that motivational factor can be relevant. A single factor can be motivational for some and could cause job dissatisfaction for other people ( Borkowski,2010 ) e.g. for some a certain salary amount might be enough to motivate them where as some could see the same amount as far less and it could negatively impact their motivational level. The finally, all that great motivation theories does not include same point. Therefore, there is no single theory that gives the answers to all of the foundd questions about motivation. What motivation is and how it impacts a person behaviour varies from individual to individualReferencesBorkowski, N.,(2010 ) Organizational Behavior in Health bursting charge Jones Bartlett LearningSrivastava,S.,K.( 2005 ) Organizational Behaviour and Management Sarup SonsKoontz,H.,Weihrich,H.,(2006 ) Essentials Of Management Tata McGraw-HillBorkowski,N.,(2010 ) Organizational Behavior in Health Care Jones B artlett LearningDavies,S.,J.( 2007 ) Security watchfulness and Management The Theory and Practice of Asset Protection Butterworth-Heinemann3.4 Evaluate the impact of technology on a given organizationCommunication technology has involved positive and negative effects on organizational communication, which is communication between people in the same organization. Organizations you belong to use organizational communication to establish communication patterns and systems.Communication technology, like email and teleconferences, makes organizational communication easily accessible. Using these methods of electronic communication can help make distance a non-factor in organizational communication .Also it helps you better collect data around the workplace, allowing her to make more informed decisions, such as how much of a raise you deserve . Technology also creates a more connected workplace. Electronic communication, like online forums, gives you a place to complain about work. Mana gers can obtain positive criticism from your complaints and make changes in erect to improve the workplace. In the past design and of computer system and products were not sensitive enough to use of everyday users. They were complicated and could only be handled by the expert users. Punch cards were fed into system that required complex processing of data. With improvement in some(prenominal) computer hardware and softwares tasks became simpler and hardware devices became easier to manipulate. The large frame computers that required expensive cooling systems , which occupied large office space were replaced by desktops that could now perform the same time with many times greater efficiency in a short span of time . The paradigm shift in the emergence of modern technology can be attributed to the development of microprocessor. Microprocessor is a small intelligent device that takes inputs processes those produces outputs with a speed that cannot be comprehended by an customary p erson.Another consideration is that might be increased accessibility of organizational communication can complicate the boundaries between your work life and home life. Be wary of how you use communication technology. For example, it might not be a good idea to accept friend requests from managers on social networking websites in order to avoid crossing boundaries. Also impact of electronic communication on organizational communication depends on how management implements the technology in the workplace. For example, email becomes near when used to schedule a company meeting. On the other hand, hackers are increasing threats to the network security. they can breach into the technological systems to get information about the individuals that they are not supposed to get. The employees are expected to perform their task with higher level of accuracy. This causes increase in stress level in the work place as failure to complete the task in an accurate manner could threaten the job of a n employee. Softwares are creation of many months, years of individual hard work. With the increase in piracy an individual might not get rewarded for his efforts. Not everyone has got the right to access the information that is out there in organization system .Unauthorized access to the organizational resources could result hierarchical protocol getting violated and it could pose a challenge to the discipline of the organization. Therefore technology has had a positive impact on the organizational infrastructure in many ways. Still it has caused certain challenges that have to be dealt with in the modern business environment.

He didnt know excatly what kind of game he had in mind, but i t didnt really matter because his manager mixed the stem. It would take another 18 years for his idea to become a reality, and by the time there would be other people to share in the glory, like Willy Higinbotham, who dwesigned an interactive tennis game played on an oscilloscoope, and Steve Russell, who programed a rudimentary space game on a DEC PDP-1 mineframe computer. Neichushas since dropped from view, and Icefrog is now thec primary point for DotA All-Stars development. While the development of new heroes and items have slowed since Guinsoos development, Icefrog is primarily attributed with bug fixes, tweaks, and balances. In DotA there was a abstruse game play that contain of cheat, role in playing game and also building item, what makes interesting.Every game is different. Should their prediction come true, they make profits if their predictions are not legitimateized, they suffer losses. Hedgers enter the market with the intention of insuring themselves against any adverse market movements they may encounter in their disdain operation. Hedging involves the creation of a position that offsets an open position occurring in their business operations so that the gain in the business (hedge) position will offset the loss of the hedging (business) position. There are various fiscal pricks use for trading in the stock market. The most common are spot haves, forward, futures, options, swaps and various coin market instruments. Forward, futures, options and swaps are derivative instruments instruments. Commonly apply instruments in the money market include (but are not limited to)Treasury bills,Eurodollar,Euro yen,Certificate of deposit (CD),Commercial paperIn fact, the money market represents most of the pecuniary instruments that have less than twelve months maturity. This margin is also known as the leverage ratio and stub range from twenty dollar bill to two hundred, depending on the fiscal institutions involved. If the given leverage ratio is twenty, the trader apply a leveraged spot gouge can have access to a credit line twenty times larger than his/her initial margin (col afterwardsal). Clearly, the leveraged ratio allows traders (both speculators and hedgers) to trade at a significantly lower capital requirement when compared to the spot market. The general implement of each of these markets (forward, futures, options, swaps and money markets) will be explained in detail in this thesis.1.2 seek ContextThe selection of the particular look for approach depends on the winsome of information required. Qualitative research collects, analyzes, and interprets entropy that cannot be meaningfully quantified, that is, summarized in the form of numbers. For this reason, soft research is sometimes referred to as soft research. Quantitative Research calls for very specific data, capable of suggesting a final family of action. A primary role of quantitative research is to test hunches or hypotheses. These suggest that qualitative approach is a soft research approach in which collected data cannot be meaningfully quantified and more importantly in this approach non-structured research is conducted. But so far as quantitative research approach is concerned, through this approach structured research is conducted with approaching larger respondents and the collected data can be meaningfully quantified. Research data can be collected either in the form of secondary or primary or both. This assumption is obviously not realistic. With the aim to close this gap between theory and practice, a unused model is developed in this thesis using the assumptions that the interest rate definitely changes fit to economic conditions or policies and that the exchange rate movement follows the pattern of a random walk, which is a stochastic process. Moreover, during the course of our research, we did not encounter any literature that dealt with leveraged spot contracts as both speculative and hedging instruments. It is obvious that the lev eraged spot market is relatively less commonly used by fiscal derivatives traders, compared to traditional instruments much(prenominal) as forward, futures, options, swaps, and the money market. Our objective is therefore to develop a model using leveraged spot contracts as an effective financial instrument that can be used for both speculative and hedging purposes.1.3 Research Objective* Analysis of Derivatives and the perception of investors1.4 Research Questions exemplify how the leveraged spot market can be utilize both as a speculating as well as a hedging tool.Derive insights into how real world data will affect the optimal number of contracts that a trader should trade (or invest) at any given time.Present a shadowy scholes model for speculation using leveraged spot contracts base on Krugmans model of exchange rate dynamics within a target zone.Demonstrate how a trader can hedge an open position in the leveraged spot market with a simultaneous position in the forward m arket to move over profit.Explain how a hedger can hedge an existing business transaction exposure using options.1.5 Research Boundary and ScopeThis thesis is organized into chapters/sections. The first chapter is an introduction to the thesis. Next chapter provides a view on hedging and the volatility of the line of work market. These two parts the first part covers a mount of hedging and explores the common applications and techniques of hedging and the second part covers the volatility of production line market movements, providing a brief stomachground on the economic fundamentals of exchange rate determination and dynamics, exchange rate systems, international financial markets, and government policies affecting exchange rate systems. How the leveraged spot market can be used as a speculating tool. We have adapted model of exchange rate dynamics within a target zone, we assume that the exchange rate movement follows the pattern of a random walk and we develop a model sho wing how the leveraged spot contract can be used as a superior financial tool when compared to forward and spot contracts under certain circumstances. However, before developing this model elaborates the mechanism of trading in the leveraged spot market with a numerical example. This describes how to eliminate the risk which arises from speculative leveraged spot transactions using a forward contract. Moreover, several numerical examples are used to illustrate how companies can utilize leveraged spot contracts as a hedging tool. We show in this chapter that the leveraged spot contract, when used in conjunction with a forward contract, can indeed derive risk free profits for its users. The effectiveness and profit generated from using leveraged spot contracts depends on the leverage ratio and the interest rate first derivative between the home and unconnected countries.Chapter 2 Literature ReviewThe financial world has witnessed several major mishaps in the last dozen years. The f irst catastrophe was the collapse of Barings curse in Britain in 1995. The banks collapse was a direct result of Nick Lessons aggressive trading in the futures and options markets. Between 1992 and 1995, the self title Rogue Trader1 accumulated losses of over 800million. In February 1995, the 233 year-old Barings Bank was unable to meet the Singapore Mercantile substitutes (SIMEX) margin call. The bank was declared bankrupt and was bought by the Dutch Bank, ING, for only 1. The second catastrophe was the Asian financial crisis in 1997. Much literature had been pen about the crisis as the financial world tries to envision what went wrong that led to the crisis. Some authors claimed that the crisis was triggered by the run of panic investors on those economies as well as depositor on banks which led to the irrupt of a bubble economy while others blamed the crisis on the moral hazard in the Asian banking (financing) systems. We believe that the Asian financial crisis was due ma inly (but not limited) to the structural imbalance in the region, caused by large current account deficits, high external debt burden, and the failure of governments to stabilize their national currencies. These problems were worsen by the poor prudential regulation of 1 Nick Lesson wrote an autobiography called Rogue Trader detailing his role in the Barings scandal while imprisoned, the Asian financial system during the 1990s. The combination of these factors contributed to the long-term accumulation of problems in fundamentals, such as large amount of over-lending and bad loans in banking systems which led to the bankruptcies of large firms/banks in the economy, and finally destroyed the confidence of investors and triggered the panic run of both investors and depositors of the Asian financial system. As part of the efforts, governments tried entering the derivative markets to stabilize their currencies. The Thai Government, for instance, utilized the forward market. However, as the world witnessed the collapse of several Asian currencies during the course of the 1997 financial crisis, it was obvious that these stabilizing efforts were not successful. As the Asian countries continued their retrieval efforts, Enron collapsed in 2001 as a result of imprudent use of financial derivatives. It had been fielded that Enrons management engaged in questionable transactions in the options market, in an attempt to keep the true economic losses of various investments off Enrons financial statements and to try to conceal the actual financial situation of the company. The consequences of these catastrophes were devastating. They impacted not only on the governments and companies directly involved in the events, but also their stake toters, such as shareholders, employees and ordinary citizens. Many studies examining international financial markets have been intentional to prevent the future occurrence of a similar catastrophe. Most of these studies are still attempting to learn from past mistakes through analyzing what exactly triggered such catastrophic events. Amongst those umteen studies, some have been undertaken to assist companies to minimize their exposure to fluctuations in the currency market, and to implement better techniques and supervision of corporate risk and management. As a result, topics such as currency exposure, hedging strategies and prudent, ethical company practices have become mainstream issues in international financial markets. This thesis is concerned with hedging techniques in sexual relation to the risk faced by companies and individuals of currency fluctuations. We will point out the limitations and strengths of common hedging techniques and then derive a new technique for hedging. This new model aims to minimize or eliminate the limitations of existing hedging techniques. The importance of understanding the underlying economic and financial fundamentals, which were possibly responsible for the 1997 Asian financial crisis, is noted. This chapter begins with a background discussion of hedging and explores the common applications and techniques of hedging. It continues by addressing exchange rate volatility through providing a brief background of the economic fundamentals of exchange rate determination and dynamics, and government policies.Globally, operations in the extraneous exchange market started in a major way after the sectionalisation of the Bretton Woods system in 1971, which also marked the beginning of floating exchange rate regimes in several countries. Over the years, the foreign exchange market has emerged as the largest market in the world. The decade of the 1990s witnessed a perceptible policy shift in many emerging markets towards reorientation of their financial markets in harm of new products and instruments, development of institutional and market infrastructure and realignment of regulatory structure consistent with the liberalized operational framework. The changing conto urs were mirrored in a speedy expansion of foreign exchange market in terms of participants, transaction volumes, decline in transaction costs and more efficient mechanisms of risk transfer. The informant of the foreign exchange market in India could be traced to the year 1978 when banks in India were permitted to undertake intra-day trade in foreign exchange. However, it was in the 1990s that the Indian foreign exchange market witnessed far reaching changes along with the shifts in the currency regime in India. The exchange rate of the rupee, that was pegged earlier was floated partially in marching 1992 and fully in surround 1993 following the recommendations of the Report of the High Level Committee on Balance of Payments (Chairman Dr. C. Rangarajan). The unification of the exchange rate was instrumental in developing a market-determined exchange rate of the rupee and an important step in the progress towards current account convertibility, which was achieved in August 1994. A supercharge impetus to the development of the foreign exchange market in India was provided with the setting up of an Expert Group on opposed Exchange Markets in India (Chairman Shri O.P. Sodhani), which submitted its report in June 1995. The Group made several recommendations for deepening and widening of the Indian foreign exchange market. Consequently, beginning from January 1996, wide-ranging reforms have been undertaken in the Indian foreign exchange market. After almost a decade, an Internal Technical Group on the Foreign Exchange Market (2005) was constituted to undertake a all-encompassing review of the measures initiated by the Reserve Bank and identify areas for further liberalization or relaxation of restrictions in a medium-term framework. The momentous developments over the past some years are reflected in the enhanced risk-bearing capacity of banks along with rising foreign exchange trading volumes and finer margins. The foreign exchange market has acquired depth. The conditions in the foreign exchange market have also for the most part remained orderly. While it is not possible for any country to remain completely unaffected by developments in international markets, India was able to keep the spillover effect of the Asian crisis to a minimum through constant monitoring and timely action, including recourse to strong monetary measures, when necessary, to prevent emergence of self-fulfilling speculative activities.2. Financial Derivatives MarketsWith the ever increasing come notional value of derivative contracts outstanding worldwide, it is little wonder that there has been straight interest in unlocking the mystery of hedging using financial derivatives. Studies have shown that in 1994, the total value of hedging was USD 18 trillion. This is more than the unite total value of shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The amount exceeded USD 55 trillion in 1996, and in 1998, the figure had already reached USD 70 trillion, which is almost four times more than in 1994. Moreover, according to Bureau of Information Statistics (2005), from 1995 to 1998, spot foreign exchange transactions increased by 15%, reaching a total of USD 600 billion-a day, while over-the-counter currency options doubled to a total outstanding daily value of USD 141 billion. According to the Central Bank Survey 2004, the average daily turnover in foreign exchange derivatives contracts rosaceous to $1,292 billion in April 2004 compared to only $853 billion in April 2001 (IBS, 2005). Table 2.1 shows that like a shot forward and foreign exchange swaps hold the record as the most popular derivatives traded over the counter. As such figures continue to climb strongly, it is important to understand the mechanism of the foreign exchange derivatives markets, including what motivates companies to enter the market, and how corporations utilize the market as a hedging mechanism. According to an author Robert W. Kolb, a deri vative is a financial instrument based upon another more elementary financial instrument. The value of the financial derivative depends upon, or derives from the more basic instrument. The base instrument is usually an underlying asset, as cash market financial instrument, such as a bond or a share of stock. The underlying instrument can also be based on movements of financial markets, interest rates, the market index, commodities, or a combination of these assets. For example, consider the derivative value of oil, which indicates that the damage of an oil futures contract would be derived from the market damage of oil, reflecting supply and demand for the commodity. In fact, as oil prices rise, so does the associated futures contract. It is noted that in order for the derivative market to be operational, the underlying asset prices have to be sufficiently volatile. This is because derivatives are risk management tools. Hence, if there is no risk in the market, there would be no n eed for the existence of any risk management tool. In other words, without manageable risk, the use of derivatives would be meaningless. Derivatives commonly used as hedging instruments include the foundational form of1. forward contracts2. futures contracts3. options contracts,4. Swaps, which involve a combination of forward and spot contracts or two forward contracts. However, with the rapidly changing business environment, many hedgers have also given increasing attention to other more sophisticated and exotic derivatives which evolved from these basic contracts and often consist of a combined use of two or more foundational contracts, such as alternatives Futures.Global otc Derivative Market Turnover, 1998-2007Daily Averages in April, in billions of USDDescription1998200120042007Foreign Exchange Power6889598531,292Outright forwards and foreign Exchange Swaps6438627861,152Currency Swaps410721Options418760117 different1002Interest Rate Turnover1512654891,025FRAs6674129233Swaps631 55331621Options213629171Other2000Total Derivatives Turnover8801,2561,3852,410MemoTurnover at April 2004 exchange rates8251,3501,6002,410Exchange traded derivatives1,2211,3822,1804,657Currency Contracts17111023Interest Rate Contracts1,2041,3712,1704,634The 2004 survey is the sixth global survey since April 1989 of foreign exchange market activity and the fourth survey since March/April 1995 covering also the over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives market activity. The survey includes information on global foreign exchange market turnover and the final statistics on OTC derivatives market turnover and amounts outstanding.2.4.2 Types of Players in Derivatives MarketsThere are three categories of players in a functioning derivatives market1. Hedgers2. Speculators3. ArbitrageursWhile each of these players use the market with alter intention, their combined and balanced influence ensure the market liquidity and volatility that allows the derivatives market to operate. It is easy yet important to differentiate the varying motives of these players. In terms of their level of risk aversion, arbitrageurs are by definition highly risk intolerant (risk averse individuals) who only trade in risk-free transactions whereas speculators are on the other side of the spectrum (risk-seeking individuals), as they make profit by taking risk hedgers are risk neutral individuals, as they choose their strategies by ranking the expected value of any given strategy. Based on their varying attitude towards risk these players tend to engage in the derivatives market with very different transaction patterns. More specifically, an arbitrageur who seeks risk-free profits will simultaneously take up a position in two or more markets, for instance, simultaneously buy spot and sell forward the INR, in an attempt to exploit mis-pricings due to a market that is not in equilibrium. However, such price differentials are almost non-existent in a well-functioning market, mainly because supply and demand tends to rapidly restore market equilibrium. As opposed to the arbitrageur, a speculator seeks profit by taking risk. For example, speculators who anticipate an appreciating INR will put their bets on the rising INR. They can do so by buying the INR at a lower value, and then selling it when the value is higher should the prediction come true. A hedger enters derivatives markets mainly with intention to insure against price volatility beyond their control. Based on this intention, it is not surprising that hedgers are mostly acting on behalf of corporations. The mechanism of hedging mainly transfers risk to others who are willing to accept the risk. Indeed, the risk is never nullified but merely transferred from one party to another. In most cases, speculators are those who absorb the risks transferred by hedgers. It is perhaps due to these notions that some have referred to the derivatives market as the zero-sum game market, where the gain of one party is exactly equal to loss of a nother party. Over the last decades, the foreign exchange markets have experienced explosive growth. Indeed, according to the Central Bank Survey 2004, the average daily turnover in traditional foreign exchange markets rose to $US 1,880 billion in April 2004 compared to $US 1,200 billion in April 2001.2.1 Option MarketSimilar to futures markets, options markets provide impersonal transactions between two participants in an organized, orderly and cost-efficient open outcry auction market. Examples of these markets are the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) and the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). An options contract gives the contract holder the right but not obligation to buy or sell an asset at a will be specific price and oral communication run into. For a currency options contract, that asset will be a currency. The contract holder is also known as the options buyer. The counterparty of a contract holder is known as the contract writer o r contract seller, who is obligated to respond to the contract holder. In other words, if the contract holder chooses to exercise the contract, the writer is obligated to respond.Call Options Right and ObligationsBuyer (holder)Seller (writer)Has the right to buy a futures contract at a regulate price on or before a defined date.Grants right to buyer, so has obligation to sell futures at a predetermined price a buyers furbish up option.Expectation Rising pricesExpectation Neutral or falling pricesPut Options Right and ObligationsBuyer (holder)Seller (writer)Has the right to sell a futures contract at a predetermined price on or before a defined date.Grants right to buyer, so has obligation to buy futures at a predetermined price a buyers sole option.Expectation Falling pricesExpectation Neutral or rising pricesThe Options markets offer two styles of contracts the American and the European. The style of an options contract dictates when it can be exercised. The American options cont ract gives the buyer (holder) the right to exercise the option at any time between the date of writing and the expiry date the European options contract, on the other hand, can only be exercised on its going away date, but not before the expiry date. In Australia, the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) only offers standardized options contracts. Overseas options markets do offer options contracts in two forms customized and standardized. The customized options contracts are also known as the over-the-counter (OTC) options. It is usually written by banks for US dollars against the British pound sterling, Swiss francs, Japanese yen, Canadian dollars and the euro. These customized options contracts can be tailored to suit individual needs, in terms of delivery dates, contract size and strike price. The contract size of these over-the-counter options contracts can reach $1 million or more with maturity of up to one or two years. The standardized option contracts are also known as exchange traded options (ETOs). These standardized options contracts were first introduced in the United States by the Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) in December 1982. Other markets such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange later followed suit. Like the futures contracts, these exchange traded options are settled through a clearinghouse. The clearinghouse acts as the middleman and handles both sides of an options transaction. Acting as the counterparty of all options contracts, the clearinghouse guarantees the fulfillment of these contracts. Until this time, currency options contracts are still not available for trading through many of the Stock Exchanges. In fact, the Australian Stock Exchange only offers equity options and index options. For traders wanting to speculate or hedge using currency options contracts, they can utilize overseas options markets that offer currency options contracts, for example the Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX). The exchange traded currency options offer s tandardized features such as expiration months and contract size. In that study, it had been found that the extensive adoption of forward contracts amongst Fortune 500 companies that were involved in currency hedging, it is by far the most commonly adopted hedging instruments. This popularity is perhaps due to the long history of usage, dating back to the early days of civilization and the trading of crop producers. Forward contracts were the first financial derivatives derived from those early buy now but pay and delive r later agreements. In contemporary business world, forward contracts are commonly known as over-the-counter transactions between two or more parties where both buyer and seller enter into an agreement for future delivery of specified amount of currency at an exchange rate agreed today. They are generally privately negotiated between two parties, not necessarily having standardized contract size and maturity. Both parties in the forward contracts are obligated to perform according to the terms and conditions as negotiated in the contracts even if the parties circumstances have changed. In other words, once a forward contract has been negotiated, both parties have to hold off for the delivery date to realize the profit or loss on their positions. Nothing happens between the contracting date and delivery date. Indeed, a forward contract cannot be resold or marked to market (where all potential profits and losses are immediately realized), because there is no secondary market for a fo rward contract. Although, technically, the forward contract can be re-negotiated with the original counterparty, it is usually practically too costly to pass away with. In fact, the counterparty is not obliged to proceed with the renegotiation. Forward contracts have one obvious limitation they lack flexibility, and therefore do not allow companies to react in a timely manner to favorable market movements. This disadvantage is widely acknowledged and often criticism by authors and hedgers. So, why are forward contracts still the most popular hedging instrument? We believe this is mainly because forward contracts allow the hedging of large volumes of transactions with extremely low costs. Indeed, the parties involved in negotiating a forward contract are typically companies that are exposed to currency risk and their nominated banks. The nominated bank typically charges a service fee, of less than 1% of the face value of the hedge amount, for acting as the counter-party in the trans action. So it is the nominal service fee that is the low cost.2.2.2 Futures MarketsFutures contracts are the first descendant of forward contracts. Futures contracts were derived, based on the fundamental of forward contracts, but with standardized quality, quantity, time (maturity), as well as place for delivery. Like other financial derivatives, futures contracts were initially knowing for commodity trading, but as commercial trading continually evolved, the initial de

Hester Essay -- essays research papers
Throughout the Rocking-Horse Winner, Hester was overly materialistic, emotionally cold towards her children and in self-denial over her own faults.Hester had expensive tastes and she insisted in safekeeping up the latest style. The expensive and splendid toys that filled the nursery were more than the parents modest income could afford. Paul asked for an explanation of luck. Hester responded by saying its what causes you to have bills, quickly making a connection between luck and wealth. And while she discovered she had a knack for sketching furs and dress materials she adored, making hundreds of pounds per year did not appease her elegant tastes, for it still wasnt enough to keep up her extravagant lifestyle. When Hester found that she had mysteriously acquired five thousand pounds, she quickly asked for the whole sum at once. This money was not used to pay off the debts the household so sorely needed it was used to purchase more cozy and unneeded items. The sprays of mimosa and almond blossom emanated from the home and was more pungent than before. Hester felt that her financial state couldnt afford to buy a car but ironically she purchases tutors for Paul and expensive items for their home. While Hester fancied lavish items, she also strived to be prestigious and gain social stature. This stature was always hard to preserve for thither was never enough money. Hester toiled to maintain her superior status and was willing to sacrifice her money to buy iridescen...
